Steven Leray Gardner

Steven Leray Gardner of Joplin, passed away quietly with his sister by his side on July 27, 2025. He was 65 years old and had fought a long, hard battle with emphysema. Steve was born on November 7, 1959, and lived in Joplin all his life. He graduated from Joplin High School in 1977.

Steve spent his employment years working in construction and plumbing until work-related injuries forced him to retire in 2016.

Steve loved riding motorcycles, dancing, and fishing. He visited the local casino to enjoy the music and dance with whoever was willing. One of his greatest joys was taking his niece (Eloise) and grandsons fishing.

Steve’s early childhood years and greatest memories were spent playing baseball, basketball, tennis, and football with his sister. Although he was a typical little brother who wanted to tag along wherever she went, he was always welcome to do so, and they were exceptionally close. In later years, they cheered for the Chiefs together, Sharon from her home in New York and Steve from his residence in Joplin.

Steven is survived by his sister, Sharon L Campfield (Dennis), his brother in-law, David, an older brother, Ralph C Esterline Jr, his sister in-law Jo, two nieces, Eloise and Rachel, five nephews, Tony, Duffy, Stephen, Butch and Curtis, three treasured grandsons, Christopher, Mario and Manny, and his lifelong best friend, Ron Gulick. Steven was preceded in death by his mother, Eloise M West, and his grandmother, Lena M King.

Steve’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. The family would also like to express their deep gratitude to all those who loved and cared for him at Joplin Health and Rehabilitation, especially Ruby, William, Hannah and a host of others. Your concern and gentle care for Steve meant so much to him and he often spoke of you highly and with deep affection.

There will be a private family burial with interment at Sterling Cemetery in Atlas.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ozark Memorial Park Crematory of Joplin, MO
